going deeper ...to go further

Daily Bible reading strengthens our relationship with God, nourishes our spirits and equips us to live a fruitful, effective life for Him.

This month we're looking at some scriptures about the Holy Spirit and faithfulness alongside reading a chapter from the New Testament each day.

  • 2SAM 22:26-37 2 Samuel 22:26-37
  • PSA 51:11-12 Psalm 51:11-12
  • LUK 10 Luke 10
  • 26“To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless,27to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.28You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.29You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.30With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. 31“As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.32For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?33It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.34He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights.35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.36You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great.37You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.

  • Other disciples sent out1Later the Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples whom He sent out in pairs. They were to go ahead of Him to prepare for His arrival in every town and place where He was to go.2Jesus said to them: "There is an abundant harvest waiting to be reaped, but only a few workers. So pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out many more workers into the harvest fields.3And go yourselves! For I am sending you out, even though you feel like lambs among wolves.4You will not need to take anything with you; neither allow yourselves to be diverted from My purpose by anyone you meet.5"On entering a house, speak these words, 'The blessing of God's peace be upon this house.'6If you are welcomed, that peace will come upon those who are there. But if you are rejected, that peace will come upon you.7"Stay in the same house and eat and drink whatever they give you; the worker deserves to receive. But do not move from one house to another.8"So when you are welcomed in a particular town, eat what is offered to you.9Then heal the sick in that place and tell them, 'God's Kingdom is now within your reach.'10-11"However, when you come to a place that does not welcome you, say publicly in the streets, 'We wipe the dust of your town off our feet as a sign against you. Understand that you reject God's offer of His Kingdom.'12I tell you clearly," continued Jesus, "on the Day of Judgment the fate of that town will be worse than what happened to Sodom.13"Korazin, you are cursed! Bethsaida, you too are cursed! For Tyre and Sidon would have repented already if I had done there the miracles that I have performed in you. Yes, they would have truly turned away from their sins.14As it is, Tyre and Sidon will fare better than you when the time for judgment comes!15"And you, Capernaum, will you be honoured and exalted because of all the great things I have done there? Not at all, you will be destroyed and your people condemned.16"The one who listens to you disciples listens to Me. And any who reject you reject Me and also the Father who sent Me."17When the seventy-two returned they were filled with joy and told Jesus: "Lord, even the demons obeyed us when we addressed them in Your name."18To this Jesus replied: "I witnessed satan being thrown out of heaven as swiftly as a flash of lightning!19I have given you authority to trample on demonic spirits and to overcome every power the enemy has. Nothing will be able to harm you as you exercise that authority.20However, your real cause for joy is not that these spirits submit to your authority, but that your names are written in heaven, that you belong to God's Kingdom. That is why you are given such authority."21Being full of the joy of the Spirit, Jesus then said: "Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I give You praise for You have hidden these things from those who consider themselves clever intellectuals and have chosen to reveal them to Your humble children. Yes, Father, this has been Your gracious will; this is what You wanted to do!22"The Father has entrusted everything into My hands," Jesus then said. "Only the Father truly knows the Son, and only the Son truly knows the Father, together with those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him."23Then Jesus said privately to His disciples: "You are blessed because of what you have seen.24I tell you clearly that many prophets and kings have wanted to see such things but never saw them, to hear what you have heard but never heard them."The parable of the Good Samaritan25Once an expert in the religious law stood to test Jesus by asking: "Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?"26Jesus replied: "What does the law say about this? What does this teach you?"27The man answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your strength and with all your mind,' and 'Love your neighbour as you love yourself.'"28"You have answered your own question correctly," Jesus replied. "If you put these words into action you will live."29Knowing he failed to do this fully, he then asked Jesus: "Who is my neighbour?"30In reply Jesus used this illustration: "A man was going from Jerusalem to Jericho when he was attacked by bandits who stripped him of his clothes, beat him up and left him lying half dead on the roadside.31When a priest came along and saw the man, he crossed to the other side of the road.32A Levite reacted in the same way.33-34But a Samaritan traveller came to where the man was lying. Seeing him there, he felt sorry for him, went to him and dressed his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then placed the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn to care for him.35On the following day he gave two silver coins to the innkeeper with the instructions to look after him. 'When I return,' he said, 'I will cover any other expense you have incurred.'36"Now which of these do you consider was the true neighbour to the man who was robbed?"37The expert in the religious law replied: "The one who had compassion on him." So Jesus told him: "Well, go and follow his example."Mary and Martha38On their journey, Jesus and His disciples came to a village where a woman called Martha welcomed them into her home.39-40Her sister Mary sat listening intently to all Jesus said while Martha was busy preparing the meal. Indignant, she said to Jesus: "Lord, does it seem right to You that my sister has left me to do all the work? Why don't You tell her to help me?"41The Lord replied: "Martha, Martha, you get so easily anxious and upset.42Only one thing is really important and this is what Mary is doing. So I certainly won't deprive her of what is most important: to listen to what I say!"

  • S.O.A.P.

In order to go further in the mission God has given us, He said we need to go deeper in our relationship with Him. As with any tree or plant, the fruit is determined by the health and depth of the root. One way we have been going deeper is by reading and journaling through the Word every day. We’ve called it S.O.A.P.

    [S]cripture - Read the Word
[O]bservation - Write down what God is saying/showing you
[A]pplication - How do we apply this in our lives?
[P]rayer - Pray through and over your life

As we read the Word (Scripture), listen to the Holy Spirit (Observation), discover how to apply that to our lives (Application) and pray these things over our lives and those in the Church (Prayer) we’re going deeper in our relationship with God so that we can go further in the mission He’s given us.

Throughout the rest of the year we’ll be continuing our Bible Reading Plan to press deeper into God so that we can go further in His purposes. Get yourself a Bible, a journal and a pen and SOAP your way through the scriptures!

You can see which chapters we’re reading today above this section.
