How to know Jesus

going deeper ...to go further

Daily Bible reading strengthens our relationship with God, nourishes our spirits and equips us to live a fruitful, effective life for Him.

This month we're looking at passages leading up to Easter alongside scriptures that talk about the victory of the cross and the power of Jesus' blood.

  • ACT 1:1-11 Acts 1:1-11
  • JOH 16:5-15 John 16:5-15
  • Promise of the Holy Spirit1-2Theophilus, I have already written an account for you of Jesus' teaching and the works He performed before His return to heaven. Before His departure, He gave the apostles He had chosen the commission they were to fulfil through the Holy Spirit.3After His death on the cross, He appeared in His risen body to these men, demonstrating that He was very much alive. During a period of forty days He appeared to them on a number of occasions and spoke further to them about God's Kingdom.4While eating with them on one occasion He commanded them: "Stay in Jerusalem until you have received the gift of the Holy Spirit that My Father promised, and of which I spoke to you.5For John only baptised people in water for the forgiveness of their sins, but within a few days you will be immersed in the Holy Spirit, baptised in His life and power."6When the apostles saw Him in His risen body, they asked Him: "Lord, is this the time when You will restore Israel as Your Kingdom people?"7Jesus told them: "The Father alone has the authority to determine when such things will happen. That is not your business.8However, you will receive God's power when you are baptised in the Holy Spirit. Then you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, the whole of Judea and Samaria and in every part of the earth."9After saying this, they watched as Jesus ascended until a cloud hid Him from their sight.10They kept staring up at the sky until two men robed in white garments stood beside them.11"You Galileans, why stand here looking into the sky? Jesus, who has now been taken from you, will Himself come back in a similar manner to the way He has just departed into heaven."

  • 6You are merely filled with grief because of what I have said. The role of the Holy Spirit7"But I tell you the truth, it is for your own good that I am now going away. For unless I leave you, the Counsellor cannot come to you. But when I return to the Father, I will send Him to you.8"When the Holy Spirit comes He will reveal to the world what is sinful and what is right in God's eyes. He will warn people of the judgment that is to come.9People will see they remain bound in sin and guilt because they do not believe in Me.10They will see that I have revealed what is true and right by the way I return to the Father, even though this means people will no longer see Me in the flesh.11They will be faced with the reality of judgment because the prince of this world now stands judged and condemned.12"There is so much more I have to say to you, but you would not be able to take it now.13But when the Spirit of Truth comes He will give you the complete revelation of the truth. He will not speak on His own initiative, but only what He hears from the Father and the Son; and He will prepare you for what lies ahead.14"The Holy Spirit will glorify Me because He will take hold of all I have said and done, and will reveal it to you.15Everything that the Father has, I also have. And everything I have, the Spirit will take and reveal to you in your experience. So I tell you clearly that everything the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit have is yours!

  • S.O.A.P.

In order to go further in the mission God has given us, He said we need to go deeper in our relationship with Him. As with any tree or plant, the fruit is determined by the health and depth of the root. One way we have been going deeper is by reading and journaling through the Word every day. We’ve called it S.O.A.P.

    [S]cripture - Read the Word
[O]bservation - Write down what God is saying/showing you
[A]pplication - How do we apply this in our lives?
[P]rayer - Pray through and over your life

As we read the Word (Scripture), listen to the Holy Spirit (Observation), discover how to apply that to our lives (Application) and pray these things over our lives and those in the Church (Prayer) we’re going deeper in our relationship with God so that we can go further in the mission He’s given us.

Throughout the rest of the year we’ll be continuing our Bible Reading Plan to press deeper into God so that we can go further in His purposes. Get yourself a Bible, a journal and a pen and SOAP your way through the scriptures!

You can see which chapters we’re reading today above this section.
